Travel Talk with Friends of STOW: David Harewood MBE

STOW speaks to British actor David Harewood MBE, star of stage and screen

To where would you most like to stowaway?

The Caribbean. I love Barbados, my parents are from there and I try and go back whenever I can. I’m a real beach lover, trekking over mountains ain’t my jam so give me heat and a pool and I’m good for 3 weeks.

Who would you take with you?

My family! I’m away most of the year filming and I miss them a lot so when I do get the chance I like to take them away for a break when we can all be together. They’re like me, they love the heat too so we sit around being really lazy, eating and drinking.

One essential piece of kit you cannot travel without, and why?

I guess it would be my phone. I hate to say it but so much of my life is tied up with it from my contacts, to all my notes and music. I also love taking photographs and there are so many shots on my phone that mean things to me so I’d have to say my phone.

What is your favourite STOW piece, and why?

I love my STOW monogrammed watch roll! I wear lots of watches as I love a good timepiece so I find it a great place to keep them all in one place instead of putting them away in a drawer.

Luxury or practicality – which one are you?

I’m much more about practicality, I love being comfortable and easy, it makes me feel happy when I’m at ease. Luxury is great when it comes to hotels and places to stay but when it comes to what I’m wearing or travelling in it has to be practical.

Best piece of travel attire to stay stylish when on the move?

I always like to wear a hat when I travel. I have many caps and hats and a good hat I find gives off a sense of style if worn correctly. Not just a baseball cap but a Baker Boy cap pulled down over one side always cuts a fine look.

How do you stay stylish when travelling?

I always try and find out as much about the where I’m going and dress accordingly, there’s nothing like getting to your destination and being uncomfortable off the bat so I do my best to prepare as much as I can before I even start packing.

Best piece of fashion advice you’ve received?

Best piece of advice for fashion would be my stylist (www.sabinaemrit.com) saying, ‘Just because you’ve worn it once doesn’t mean you can’t wear it again.’ I used to buy so many clothes because I felt I had to be in something new, but I’ve decided that with imagination it’s always easy to mix and match your wardrobe depending on the occasion. And it creates sustainable fashion.

Which luxury item can you not travel without?

A good bag, I find, is essential. When you travel like I do there’s always a chance that you may find yourself doing some last minute shopping and there’s nothing worse than travelling through airports with 2 or 3 different bags of goods. I’ve left so much stuff on planes over the years that now I make sure it’s all in the same place!
